Churchill Fire was dispatched to a reported transformer explosion on Beulah Road near Fenwick Drive in Churchill on Friday, October 23, 21:43.
122 Engine, Rescue, Squad and Chief responded and found multiple wires down and power out in the area. The top of a power pole had broken and the high voltage wires feeding Churchill Commons and Westinghouse were on the ground near Beulah and Old Beulah road. A live 120 volt wire was also down on a road sign between Fewick Dr and Lewin Lane on Beulah Road causing the sign to smoke.
122 Engine stood by the energized sign. Rescue 122 stood by the downed high voltage wires. Squad 122 blocked traffic at the Churchill Commons Westinghouse entrance. Wilkins 302 Rescue and Engine were called to assist with blocking traffic at Lewin Lane and Fenwick Drive.
Duquesne light crews arrived after 1 hour and repaired the downed 120volt line. After power was de-energized, 122 Engine used a water can to douse the smoldering road sign.
Churchill and Wilkins units cleared the scene at 2330 and Duquesne Light remained on scene overnight to repair the downed high voltage.
