Churchill Fire responded to reported generator on fire behind St John Fisher Catholic Church on Lewin Lane in Churchill on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 00:31. 122 Chief was the first unit on scene and established command with a confirmed working fire involving a generator and shed with exposure to the adjacent building windows.
122 Rescue arrived on scene and deployed a 1-1/2″ foam line and tank water to knock down and extinguish the fire, and prevent it from extending into the building. 153 Engine, 302 Engine, 302 Squad, 303 Truck, 303 Attack, 304 Engine, 122 Squad and 122 Command also responded to the incident, with 137 Rescue as the RIT.
Several windows were broken due to the heat and flames, allowing smoke to enter the lower and main floors. Crews performed overhaul of the choir room ceiling space adjacent to the generator shed. Crews also used numerous electric ventilation fans to ventilate smoke that had flowed into the Sanctuary through the broken exposure windows.
Allegheny County Fire Marshall’s office responded and the cause is still under investigation.
137 RIT was released from standby at 0126 and other units began to return to service at 0300 after ventilation was completed. Churchill units remained on scene until 0420 when the Fire Marshall had completed investigation.
